NRI Investment Services
Investing from abroad is rarely blocked by the investment. It is blocked by paperwork — and we handle that end to end for investors in 10+ countries.
Are you an NRI, PIO or OCI investing in India?
We help Non-Resident Indians, Persons of Indian Origin and Overseas Citizens of India living around the world to invest in India. Around a tenth of the investors we serve are non-resident, across more than ten countries. We will guide you through the initial documentation — PAN, KYC, FATCA and the rest — and then through the investing itself.
What NRIs can invest in
The routes available to a non-resident investor in India include:
- Bank deposits — NRE, NRO and FCNR
- Secondary market investment in equity shares and convertible debentures through the Portfolio Investment Scheme
- New issues of shares and convertible debentures
- Non-convertible debentures
- Mutual funds, provided the amount is invested out of an NRE, FCNR or NRO account or by inward remittance
- Deposits with Indian companies on a non-repatriation basis, subject to conditions
- Immovable property, other than agricultural land, plantation property or a farm house, funded by fresh inward remittance or from an existing non-resident account
NRE or NRO — decide before you invest
Investments made from an NRE account are generally freely repatriable. Investments made from an NRO account face a cap on repatriation and require a chartered accountant’s certification. Neither is wrong; they serve different purposes. But the redemption follows the source account, so the choice needs to be deliberate.
A note on the US and Canada
Many Indian AMCs restrict or decline investments from residents of the United States and Canada because of FATCA compliance obligations. Some accept them with additional declarations or only for physically submitted transactions. This is not universal, but it must be checked before you choose a scheme rather than after. We will confirm your eligibility first.
How we work across time zones
Reviews happen over video at a time that suits your zone rather than ours. Documentation is digital wherever the rules allow it. You get the same online portfolio access as every other client, so you can check your India investments at any hour. Write to services@sunshinefinancials.com and we will come back to you.
